Kapitel 1 – Silvester 2000

Die Wohnung war zu voll, um sich noch gut bewegen zu können.
The apartment was too full to move around comfortably.

Jacken hingen über Stuhllehnen, Schuhe standen ungeordnet im Flur, und irgendwo klingelte ständig ein Handy, das niemand sofort fand.
Jackets hung over chair backs, shoes stood scattered in the hallway, and somewhere a mobile phone kept ringing that no one immediately found.

In der Küche war es warm, der Herd lief seit Stunden, auf der Arbeitsfläche standen Schüsseln, Platten und angebrochene Flaschen dicht nebeneinander.
In the kitchen it was warm, the stove had been on for hours, and bowls, platters, and opened bottles stood close together on the counter.

Ein feuchtes Tuch lag zusammengeknüllt neben der Spüle.
A damp cloth lay crumpled next to the sink.

Jemand hatte versucht, Ordnung zu halten, hatte aber längst aufgegeben.
Someone had tried to keep things orderly but had long since given up.

Am Tisch saßen Kinder auf Kissen, aßen Chips und griffen immer wieder nach den Salzstangen.
Children sat on cushions at the table, ate chips, and kept reaching for the pretzel sticks.

Krümel lagen auf dem Boden.
Crumbs lay on the floor.

Mia lag im Kinderwagen, eingepackt, schlief trotz des Lärms.
Mia lay bundled up in the stroller, sleeping despite the noise.

Lena rutschte von einem Stuhl, stand wieder auf und lief zu Julia, die gerade Gläser aus dem Schrank holte.
Lena slid off a chair, stood back up, and walked over to Julia, who was just taking glasses out of the cupboard.

„Nicht rennen“, sagte Julia, ohne sich umzudrehen.
"Don't run," Julia said without turning around.

Lena blieb stehen, sah kurz zu ihrer Mutter und ging langsamer weiter.
Lena stopped, briefly looked at her mother, and continued more slowly.

Martin stand am Fenster und sah nach draußen.
Martin stood by the window and looked outside.

Auf der Straße parkten Autos dicht an dicht, in der Ferne lachte jemand laut, eine Tür schlug zu.
Cars were parked tightly along the street, someone laughed loudly in the distance, a door slammed shut.

Im Wohnzimmer liefen mehrere Gespräche gleichzeitig.
Several conversations were going on at the same time in the living room.

Thomas sprach mit Eva über die nächsten Arbeitstage, Termine, wer wann frei hatte.
Thomas talked with Eva about the upcoming workdays, appointments, and who would have time off when.

Jonas hörte nur halb zu, hielt Paul auf dem Arm, der unruhig wurde und nach der Brille seines Vaters griff.
Jonas only listened halfway, holding Paul in his arms, who became restless and reached for his father's glasses.

Katharina nahm ihm das Kind ab und wiegte es leicht, Schritt für Schritt.
Katharina took the child from him and gently rocked him, step by step.

Michael stand mit Lukas und Peter am Tisch.
Michael stood at the table with Lukas and Peter.

Bierflaschen klirrten, als jemand einen Teller beiseiteschob.
Beer bottles clinked as someone pushed a plate aside.

„Gleich ist es so weit“, sagte Peter und sah auf die Uhr. „Noch fünf Minuten.“
"It's almost time," Peter said, looking at his watch. "Five more minutes."

„Na dann – auf ein neues Jahrhundert“, sagte Lukas.
"Well then—to a new century," Lukas said.

Maria kam mit einer Schüssel Kartoffelsalat aus der Küche.
Maria came out of the kitchen with a bowl of potato salad.

Der Löffel klapperte am Rand.
The spoon rattled against the rim.

„Wer hat noch keinen?“
"Who doesn't have any yet?"

Mehrere Hände gingen hoch.
Several hands went up.

Sie stellte die Schüssel ab, reichte Löffel weiter.
She set the bowl down and passed around spoons.

Anna setzte sich dazu, sagte wenig und hörte zu, die Ellenbogen auf den Tisch gestützt.
Anna sat down with them, said little, and listened, her elbows resting on the table.

Sabine saß etwas abseits auf dem Sofa, ein Glas in der Hand, und beobachtete das Ganze.
Sabine sat slightly apart on the sofa, a glass in her hand, and watched everything.

Sie sah zu Emma, die im Sessel neben ihr saß, eine Decke über den Knien.
She looked over at Emma, who sat in the armchair next to her, a blanket over her knees.

Emma sprach leise mit Claudia, beide beugten sich ein wenig zueinander.
Emma spoke softly with Claudia, both leaning slightly toward each other.

„Es ist laut“, sagte Emma.
"It's loud," Emma said.

„Ja“, sagte Claudia. „Aber es ist gut so.“
"Yes," Claudia said. "But it's good this way."

Hans saß am Rand des Zimmers, die Hände auf den Knien, den Blick ruhig.
Hans sat at the edge of the room, his hands on his knees, his gaze calm.

Er sprach mit niemandem, hörte zu.
He spoke to no one and listened.

Als jemand das Radio lauter drehte, verzog er kurz das Gesicht, sagte aber nichts.
When someone turned up the radio, he briefly grimaced but said nothing.

„Noch eine Minute!“, rief jemand aus der Küche.
"One more minute!" someone called from the kitchen.

Gläser wurden eingeschenkt, Kinder wurden hochgenommen oder auf die Schultern gesetzt.
Glasses were filled, children were picked up or set on shoulders.

Lena drängte sich zu Julia.
Lena pushed her way over to Julia.

„Ich will auch“, sagte sie und zeigte auf das Glas.
"I want some too," she said, pointing at the glass.

„Das ist nur Saft“, sagte Julia und reichte ihr ein kleines Plastikbecherchen.
"That's just juice," Julia said, handing her a small plastic cup.

Im Radio begann der Countdown.
The countdown began on the radio.

Gespräche verstummten, Stimmen zählten mit, manche lachten, manche riefen dazwischen.
Conversations fell silent, voices counted along, some laughed, some shouted in between.

„Drei!“
"Three!"

„Zwei!“
"Two!"

„Eins!“
"One!"

„Frohes neues Jahr!“
"Happy New Year!"

Jemand öffnete eine Flasche zu früh, es spritzte auf den Tisch, Gelächter brach aus.
Someone opened a bottle too early, it splashed onto the table, laughter broke out.

Umarmungen, schnelle Küsse, ein Händedruck hier, ein Schulterklopfen dort.
Hugs, quick kisses, a handshake here, a pat on the shoulder there.

Kinder wurden gedrückt, Mia bewegte sich kurz, schlief weiter.
Children were hugged, Mia stirred briefly, then kept sleeping.

Draußen knallte das erste Feuerwerk.
Outside, the first fireworks exploded.

Farben spiegelten sich in den Fenstern.
Colors reflected in the windows.

Martin öffnete das Fenster einen Spalt, kalte Luft kam herein und vermischte sich mit Essensgeruch und einem Hauch von Rauch.
Martin opened the window a crack, cold air came in and mixed with the smell of food and a hint of smoke.

„Nicht so weit auf“, sagte Maria. „Die Kinder.“
"Not so far open," Maria said. "The children."

Julia hob Lena hoch und hielt sie fest.
Julia lifted Lena up and held her tightly.

Lukas stand daneben, sah hinaus und sagte nichts.
Lukas stood next to her, looked outside, and said nothing.

Peter machte Fotos, unscharf, mit Blitz.
Peter took photos, blurry, with flash.

„Auf euch“, sagte Thomas und hob sein Glas.
"To you," Thomas said, raising his glass.

„Auf uns“, sagte Eva.
"To us," Eva said.

Hans nickte einmal, hob ebenfalls sein Glas und trank einen kleinen Schluck.
Hans nodded once, also raised his glass, and took a small sip.

Emma lächelte müde.
Emma smiled tiredly.

Es gab kein Innehalten, keinen Satz über die Zukunft.
There was no pause, no sentence about the future.

Das neue Jahr war da, einfach so, zwischen Gläsern, Stimmen und dem Geräusch von Feuerwerk.
The new year was there, just like that, among glasses, voices, and the sound of fireworks.

Später setzte sich jemand wieder an den Tisch, jemand räumte Teller weg, Kinder wurden müde.
Later someone sat back down at the table, someone cleared plates away, children grew tired.

Die Gespräche gingen weiter, leiser und ungeordneter.
The conversations continued, quieter and more disordered.

Draußen knallte es noch lange.
Outside, the explosions continued for a long time.

Drinnen war es warm.
Inside, it was warm.

Zusammenfassung
