Kapitel 1 – Ein kalter Morgen

Der Morgen ist kalt, und ein feiner Wind zieht durch die schmalen Gassen von Augsburg.
The morning is cold, and a light wind moves through the narrow alleys of Augsburg.

Anna öffnet den kleinen Laden früher als sonst, weil sie hofft, dass einige Kunden auf dem Weg zum Markt vorbeikommen.
Anna opens the small shop earlier than usual because she hopes that some customers will stop by on their way to the market.

Die Holztür klemmt leicht, da sie über Nacht feucht geworden ist.
The wooden door sticks slightly because it has become damp overnight.

Als sie sie aufdrückt, hört sie das leise Knarren, das durch den quiet square echoes.
As she pushes it open, she hears the soft creaking that echoes across the quiet square.

Ein schwacher Geruch nach frischem Holz liegt in der Luft, denn die Werkstatt nebenan hat schon begonnen zu arbeiten.

Im Laden ist es kühl, und Anna reibt sich die Hände, bevor sie die Kerze anzündet.

Ihr Blick bleibt lange auf einer Frau stehen, die mit einem kleinen Korb vorbeigeht.

„Es ist ein stiller Tag“, sagt die Mutter leise, „aber etwas liegt in der Luft.“
“It is a quiet day,” the mother says softly, “but there is something in the air.”

Anna nickt, obwohl sie nicht genau weiß, was die Mutter meint.
Anna nods, although she does not know exactly what her mother means.

Doch auch sie spürt eine leichte Spannung, die sich schwer beschreiben lässt.
Yet she too senses a slight tension that is hard to describe.

Als ein Hund über den Platz läuft und den Kopf in ein leeres Fass steckt, muss Anna kurz lächeln.
When a dog runs across the square and sticks its head into an empty barrel, Anna has to smile briefly.

Es ist nur ein kleiner Augenblick, aber er lockert die Stimmung.
It is only a small moment, but it lightens the mood.

Dann richtet sie sich wieder auf und stellt neue Ware auf den Tisch.
Then she straightens up again and places new goods on the table.

Draußen wird es heller, und langsam beginnt der Tag.

Anna atmet tief ein.
