Kapitel 1 – Früher Schnee
Der Frühling beginnt, doch die Luft über Augsburg ist kalt.
Spring begins, but the air over Augsburg is cold.
Viele Menschen sagen, dass das Wetter „im Boden bleibt“, da
die Kälte nicht verschwindet.
Many people say that the weather “stays in the ground,” because the cold
does not disappear.
Auf den Feldern rund um die Stadt liegt ein dünner
Schneestreifen, obwohl es schon Mai ist.
On the fields around the town, a thin strip of snow lies, even though it is
already May.
Die Erde ist hart und dunkel, und nasses Gras hängt schwer
über den Wegen.
The ground is hard and dark, and wet grass hangs heavily over the paths.
Einige Bürger stehen am Rand der Felder und sehen still auf
die weißen Flächen.
Some townspeople stand at the edge of the fields and look silently at the
white patches.
Niemand spricht viel, da alle verstehen, was der Schnee
bedeutet: ein weiteres schweres Jahr.
No one speaks much, because everyone understands what the snow means:
another difficult year.
Priester Hartwig geht langsam über den Platz vor St. Ulrich
und Afra.
Father Hartwig walks slowly across the square in front of St. Ulrich and
Afra.
Er möchte die Stimmung beobachten, um später zu wissen, wem
er helfen muss.
He wants to observe the mood so that later he will know whom he must help.
Der Rauch aus den Häusern steigt nur schwach in die Luft,
weil das Holz zu feucht ist, um gut zu brennen.
The smoke from the houses rises only faintly into the air, because the wood is
too damp to burn well.
Eine Frau öffnet ihr Fenster und hält die Hand hinaus, um die
kalte Luft zu fühlen.
A woman opens her window and holds her hand outside to feel the cold air.
Sie schüttelt den Kopf und schließt das Fenster wieder.
She shakes her head and closes the window again.

A wagon with two horses comes with difficulty over the wet stones.

The driver calls softly because the animals are slipping.
Priester Hartwig tritt zur Seite, damit er vorbeikommt.
Father Hartwig steps aside so that he can pass.
Dann bleibt er stehen und sieht zum Himmel, der schwer und
grau ist.
Then he stops and looks up at the sky, which is heavy and gray.
Er erinnert sich an das letzte Jahr und daran, wie schlecht
die Ernte war.
He remembers the previous year and how poor the harvest was.
Viele Bürger konnten damals kaum genug Brot kaufen, und
manche mussten sich an die Kirche wenden.
Many townspeople could hardly buy enough bread at that time, and some had to
turn to the church.
Da es noch kalt ist, wissen
alle, dass sie wieder vorsichtig leben müssen.
Since it is still cold, everyone knows that they must live carefully again.
Priester Hartwig atmet tief ein, um ruhig zu bleiben.
Father Hartwig takes a deep breath in order to remain calm.
Er plant, später mehrere Familien zu besuchen, um zu hören,
wie es ihnen geht.
He plans to visit several families later to hear how they are doing.
Die Stimmung in der Stadt ist still, aber voller Sorge.
