Kapitel 1 – Augsburg am Morgen
Der Morgen ist noch kühl.
The morning is still cool.
Feuchte Luft liegt über den Gassen.
Damp air lies over the alleys.
Linas kleiner Bruder Jakob steht vor dem Haus und sieht in
die Straße.
Lina’s younger brother Jakob stands in front of the house and looks into the
street.
Der Steinboden ist noch dunkel vom Nachtregen.
The stone pavement is still dark from the night rain.
Grauer Rauch steigt aus einem Schornstein.
Gray smoke rises from a chimney.
Jakob geht zum Markt.
Jakob goes to the market.
In der Luft liegt der Geruch von Brot, Kräutern und etwas
Rauch.
In the air is the smell of bread, herbs, and a little smoke.
Ein Hund läuft zwischen den Ständen und schnuppert an einem
Fass.
A dog runs between the stalls and sniffs at a barrel.
Tauben picken Körner vom Boden.
Pigeons peck grains from the ground.
Viele Händler rufen.
Many traders call out.
Einer zeigt rotes Tuch, ein anderer verkauft helle Kerzen.
One displays red cloth, another sells pale candles.
Nicht weit vom Markt steht eine Druckerei.
Not far from the market stands a printing shop.
Aus der offenen Tür kommt der starke Geruch von Papier und
Tinte.
From the open door comes the strong smell of paper and ink.
Jakob hört ein tiefes Knarren.
Jakob hears a deep creaking sound.
Es ist die Presse.
It is the press.
Ein junger Mann trägt einen Stapel Papier durch die Gasse.
A young man carries a stack of paper through the alley.
Auf den Blättern stehen neue Lieder.
New songs are written on the sheets.
Zwei Frauen bleiben stehen und lesen ein paar Zeilen.
Two women stop and read a few lines.
Eine von ihnen summt leise eine Melodie.
One of them hums a melody softly.
Jakob bleibt kurz vor der Druckerei stehen.
Jakob stops briefly in front of the printing shop.
Er denkt: In unserer Stadt gibt es jetzt viele neue Lieder.
He thinks: In our town there are now many new songs.
Dann geht er weiter zum Stand der Familie Hartwig.
Then he goes on to the stall of the Hartwig family.
Dort liegen Stoffballen in verschiedenen Farben.
There lie bolts of fabric in different colors.
Hartwig, der Vater, spricht ruhig mit einem Kunden.
Hartwig, the father, speaks calmly with a customer.
Die Familie ist katholisch und arbeitet als Weber.
The family is Catholic and works as weavers.
Jakob fühlt sich klein zwischen all den Stimmen, aber er
sieht alles genau.
Jakob feels small among all the voices, but he observes everything closely.
