Kapitel 1 – Der Sonntag der Nachricht

Der Morgen ist kühl, und ein leichter Nebel liegt über der Stadt.
The morning is cool, and a light mist lies over the town.

Hartwig steht mit Adela vor der Kirche St. Ulrich & Afra.
Hartwig stands with Adela in front of the Church of St. Ulrich & Afra.

Der Geruch von feuchtem Holz und Rauch kommt aus den Häusern.
The smell of damp wood and smoke comes from the houses.

Einige Pilger stehen auf dem Platz.
Some pilgrims are standing in the square.

Ein Hund läuft zwischen ihren Füßen.
A dog runs between their feet.

Die Glocke läutet.
The bell rings.

Die Menschen gehen langsam in die Kirche.
The people slowly go into the church.

Hartwig spürt eine ruhige Erwartung.
Hartwig feels a calm sense of expectation.

Rudolf steht vorn beim Altar.
Rudolf stands at the front near the altar.

Er wirkt ernst.
He appears serious.

Nach dem Gebet tritt ein fremder Prediger vor.
After the prayer, a foreign preacher steps forward.

Seine Stimme ist laut und klar.
His voice is loud and clear.

Er sagt, dass viele Männer in das Heilige Land wollen.
He says that many men want to go to the Holy Land.

Er sagt, dass der Weg weit ist und dass Gott Kraft gibt.
He says that the journey is long and that God gives strength.

Einige Leute flüstern.
Some people whisper.

Andere nicken still.
Others nod quietly.

Adela sieht kurz zu Hartwig.
Adela briefly looks at Hartwig.

Sie sagt nichts, aber ihr Gesicht wirkt dunkel und ruhig.
She says nothing, but her face appears dark and calm.

Eine Fliege setzt sich auf den Rand ihrer Haube.
A fly lands on the edge of her hood.

Sie wischt sie langsam weg.
She slowly brushes it away.

Rudolf spricht danach leise mit dem Prediger.
Afterwards, Rudolf speaks quietly with the preacher.

Hartwig riecht den warmen Rauch der Kerzen und hört die Menschen tuscheln.
Hartwig smells the warm smoke of the candles and hears the people murmuring.

Die Stimmung ist schwer.
The atmosphere is heavy.

Als sie die Kirche verlassen, sieht Hartwig zwei Männer in dicken Mänteln.
As they leave the church, Hartwig sees two men in thick coats.

Sie sprechen über Waffen und über Arbeit beim Schmied.
They talk about weapons and about work at the blacksmith’s.

Die Gassen sind eng und feucht.
The alleys are narrow and damp.

Eine Ratte huscht an einer Mauer entlang.
A rat scurries along a wall.

Hartwig atmet tief.
Hartwig takes a deep breath.

Er fühlt sich unsicher, aber er sagt nichts.
He feels uncertain, but he says nothing.

Adela hält die Hand an den Korb und geht ruhig neben ihm.
Adela holds her hand on the basket and walks calmly beside him.

Heute beginnt eine Unruhe in der Stadt.
Today, an unrest begins in the town.
